Is Off-Body Carry Safe?

Even though I carry on-body 99% of the time, I’m not completely opposed to carrying off-body.

There are pros and cons, like everything else.

My beef is that it’s usually presented as the easiest option for newbies, but I think it’s more of an intermediate to advanced skill.

I say that because there’s a little more to consider when it comes to drawing safely and efficiently.

Make sure you:

  • Only use a hard, Kydex holster that’s attached securely to the bag.

  • Keep your firearm in a designated pocket without anything else.

  • Keep your support hand out of the way when you draw.

  • Realize that bags move so your gun will be in different positions.

  • Follow all the rules of off-body carry like never setting your bag down.

I’ve seen people draw stupid fast from bags so it’s possible, but not without a ton of practice.

You have to be willing to put the time and work into it, like everything else.

And, like any other method of carry, you have to practice the heck out of it.

I love this cute sling bag from Cameleon Bags. It has a back pocket with zipper access on each side.

The back panel is velcro so I attach my velcro modular holster from Crossbreed and it stays on securely.

What are your thoughts on off-body carry?
